As Seen In Better Homes & Gardens
Verdigris
Feature from Better Homes & Gardens, Do It Yourself Special Interest Publication, Fall '95
It looks like copper that has aged gracefully. Who's to guess you painted it just a few days ago? Plus, you'll love the look you get with flat latex paint and common items, right?

Verdigris Step-by-step

1. Prime and paint the surface black.
2. Dilute all paints with water (one part paint to two parts water)
Dampen a sea sponge in water and dip one corner of the sponge into the diluted dark green mixture. Sponge the surface in a random pattern. Repeat sponging process using diluted medium blue-green paint and diluted pastel green paint. Finish by sparingly sponging diluted raw sienna paint onto the surface.
3. To give the finish the texture and depth of patina, hold the container of powdered plaster 10-12 inches about the sample. Lightly sprinkle plaster on the surface.
4. Using a sponge, lightly dab the colors and plaster, moving in a diagonal direction. Do not over work the sample or create obvious patterns.
5. Let dry. Wipe the surface firmly with a cotton rag to create a flat, chalky finish.

Variations on a theme

Create the look of copper patina by using copper paint and a mild acidic solution. This process actually oxidizes copper, creating a rich blue-green finish.
